About Tatiana

From 2003 through 2007, Tatiana led Slaveya as Artistic Director.  Tatiana  is a world-renowned Balkan vocalist, composer, and teacher.  Tatiana's amazing vocal prowess is matched by her magnetic stage presence and her charismatic delivery.  Born in the village of Rila in the Pirin region of Bulgaria, Tatiana rose quickly through the ranks of the finest Bulgarian state choruses to become one of the preeminent soloists of her generation.  For many years, she was the featured soloist of the internationally acclaimed Pirin Ensemble.  With Pirin, she toured extensively, made numerous recordings and appeared in TV films, earning "national treasure" status and recognition as "the voice of Bulgaria."  Her extensive repertoire includes music from all of Bulgarias folklore regions.

 

Since emigrating to the United States in 1991, Tatiana has taught at the Boston Conservatory of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston University, and at the Eastern European Folklife Centers Balkan camp.  She has coached  several leading Balkan performing groups in the U.S., including Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble.  In 2005, Tatiana was invited to compose music and coach the chorus for the University of Maryland production of Trojan Women.  She is currently Artistic Director of of Divi Zheni ("Wild Women") and Zornitsa ("Morning Star," a men's group), both in Boston.  In February 2005, Tatiana was awarded the 2004 Wammy (Washington Area Music Award) for Best World Music Vocalist.  In 2006, Tatiana was awarded the Ivan Vazov medal in Bulgaria for her contribution to Bulgarian arts and letters.  For more information, visit http://www.tatianasarbinska.com

Congratulations to Tatiana Sarbinska, who was awarded the prestigious Ivan Vazov medal for her contribution to Bulgarian culture.  Bulgarian Ambassador H. E. Elena Poptodorova delivered the award to Tatiana in Sofia on May 21, 2006 during a celebration of the Bulgarian cultural holiday festival honoring Slavic letters and the Bulgarian contribution to culture and enlightment.
